Limnophilia

Definitions

Limne (lim`nay; Greek). A pond or lake. Limnology (lim-nol’-o-jee). The study of inland waters. A.k.a. “The science of ropes and buckets”. Founded by Francois-Alphonse Forel in the late 1800s, who initiated the first known scientific studies of lakes (Lake Geneva in this case).  Philia (filia; Greek), often translated “brotherly love”, is one of the four ancient Greek words for love: philia, storge, agape and eros.

Together the words form Limnophilia the love of studying lakes.
