Pelagic food web controls on phytoplankton and the influence of perch in eutrophication

Sami Khan (PhD student) and Helen Trotter (MSc student) have been studying the trophic linkages between fish, Daphnia and phytoplankton in two eutrophic Otago lakes. Their work is driven by an interest in the potential to employ classical biomanipulation techniques to mediate phytoplankton biomass and to thereby increase ecological resistance and resilience to eutrophication. This work is supported by the Friends of Lake Hayes and a subcontract from the MBIE Programme called the Health and Resilience of NZ Lakes and Estuaries held by the Waikato University.
